¿What is Critique?

By: Gustavo Valencia P.

"If the excessive attention to the content leads to arrogance of interpretation, the more extensive description of the form silences it."
"The best critique and it is not often, dissolves the considerations of the content in the form considerations".
Susan Sontag

Critique is a study on the form and the language used by the author according to the medium, which serves to emphasize how it is said and not in what it is said; It is an analysis of the elements used and his talent to express with them; It is a reference documented in relation to other styles and genres, since that required in-depth study and extensive knowledge on the subject; and finally, it is a reflection on the themes proposed. It is an intellectual effort that transcends personal tastes of the author, in other words, assumes a sifting of ideas and concepts on the various topics mentioned, a process of thinking and reasoning, which presents an exhibition of arguments and opinions, based on criteria and elements of aesthetic and humanistic judgments, own and independent and for that reason, presented for discussion and controversy, since that debate that raises is its only desire and becomes in its best reward.

Critique is thus a theoretical essay that delivers a set of approaches on the scope of its study, providing an intellectual product constructive and analytical, which is constituted by thoughts and theories that are the result of the time and therefore are transitory and historical; sometimes it represents the worldview and the not predominant ideology of the socio-cultural moment of the subject who expresses and in any event, accepting its limited and temporary character. But that it is not the cause to fail to exercise the use of reason with one of its most valuable fruits: the criticism.

Critique will never be a simple rating or a loose adjective which as such does not express nor proposed absolutely nothing, which confuses desires, inclinations and personal tastes with the Act of thinking, because criticism is a mental product, is an exercise in reasoning, not a vacuous reactive impulse, which lacks of a lower analysis, deforms and distorts with its weak interpretation making career the delivery to the whim and personal whishes, imposing the disfigurement and distortion, ultimately the creation of myths and misunderstandings that falsify and change everything, as result of lacking the activity of thinking and reflection. The lack of control of the emotional reduces and puts at your service the little remains of the mental, further developing the fetish, trapped in the content and the story, builds the way that leads to the apology and exegesis without any basis and therefore to the exaltation, the fanaticism and idolatry that are now present, in all levels and orders, fatal signal of these times, that means, here it is again the domain of the irrational.

Critique in its opposite extreme is not only the emotional simplicity of the "I like" or "I do not like", wrong reaction -in itself- and without any validity, but it is the impetus and support to all the irrational which corresponds to socio-historical periods as the current; period of increasing denial of whatever is the product of reason, that besides at the time of the mega enterprises, it is dedicated to the dissemination and marketing of what is assumed is the object of criticism, falling into its perversion, or simple commercial promotion dressed up as "impartial information and analysis". Now the madame of the brothel also owns the Academy.

Critique is a theoretical essay, a reflective, extensive and deep look that delivers a set of approaches to propose and open up new prospects, furthermore invites to the pleasure of thinking and uses the attributes of rational beings; and given the growing obscurity and sinister darkness of the unreason which oppressively invades the world, it does not frighten itself nor restricts its activity, but opposes its voice courageously, convinced that in its rational demonstration also carries shoots of light and seeds of freedom.
